Use sub-objects to add multiple types of content to one course and restrict the course from being marked complete until the learner has completed all the sub-objects.
This article applies to Team Admins and Team Leaders.
Creating a Course with Sub-Objects
A benefit of content objects is the ability to create sub-objects. Sub-objects allow you to add multiple types of content to one course and restrict the course from being marked complete until the learner has completed all sub-objects.
First, create your Content Object from the Learning Navigator. Other configurations for a Content Object include:
- Folder: This field is pre-populated with the folder selected for the content object.
- Parent Object: This field is pre-populated when creating a Content Object from an existing object; otherwise, the field will display n/a.
- Name: Enter the name of the new Content Object.
- Language: If you have other languages configured for your site, you can select additional languages.
-
Publish: Select Yes to publish immediately or No to publish later.
-
Content Type: Select one of the available content types. Online is the most common content type.
-
Training Hours: Identify the number of hours or minutes to complete the course.
- Create Self-Paced Offering: Since this is the parent object, you will select Yes to create the self-paced offering. You would select No if creating a sub-object because only the parent object needs an offering.
- Certificate Display: This option controls if a certificate is provided upon completion.
After the required fields are complete, click on Create. The screen will refresh, and the new object will appear in the folder hierarchy. If Yes was selected for Create Self-Paced Offering, you will be prompted to complete the steps to create an offering.
Adding Sub-Objects
After creating the parent object, you can create sub-objects to incorporate different content types related to a topic. With sub-objects, you can also require that all sub-objects be completed before the training is marked complete.
What is a Sub-Object? Sub-objects allow you to add multiple types of content to one course and restrict the course from being marked complete until the learner has completed all sub-objects.
After you've added your sub-objects, click on Publish. Be sure that the parent object and its offering are also published.
If you want sub-objects to be created in a specific order, you must set up a Prerequisite.
- Click on the sub-objects in the folder structure that you want completed LAST. Click on the prerequisites tab and then "Add Prerequisite".
- Search for the name of the sub-object you want learners to complete first. Repeat until you have the order you desire. Click Save.
