Learn about Career Pathways by WorkForge
What is a Career Pathway?
A career pathway is a series of structured courses that give learners a clear and defined route for advancement within the organization, from entry-level to leader.
WorkForge has organized content into guided pathways to quickly move employees from entry to advanced levels in less time.
A Career Pathway provides a clear and defined training course route for employees to progress through to further their education and career within the organization.
A well-defined Career Pathway is essential for the success of learning and development initiatives. Using Career Pathways provides:
- Clear objectives: A plan sets specific goals and outlines the skills and knowledge to be acquired.
- Focus and direction: A well-structured plan ensures that the training aligns with the organization's overall goals and the employee's career growth.
- Progress tracking: A plan allows organizations to identify strengths and areas for improvement, make adjustments, and measure training effectiveness.
- Career development: A comprehensive plan considers both immediate skill development and long-term career growth for employees to progress.
- Retention and employee satisfaction: Providing employees with a clear path for professional development can enhance their job satisfaction and increase retention rates.
Types of Career Pathways
Two basic types of Career Pathways are foundational and functional.
- Foundational courses teach transferable traits and abilities not specific to a single job or industry.
- Functional courses teach specific competencies and technical knowledge required to perform specific tasks or jobs.
The Structure of a Career Pathway
A pathway is divided into skill-based levels, from intermediate to advanced. Each level contains a series of courses completed sequentially, beginning with level 1. As learners progress, they can earn micro-credentials to showcase what they have learned.
Courses
A Career Pathway is a series of courses curated to build on one another as knowledge is gained. A Course may consist of the following elements:
- Module (the interactive learning content)
- Study Guide
- Assessment (designed to evaluate the learner's acquisition of desired competencies from the course content, ensuring their readiness to advance to the next level).
